From: Ohio State University Date: 2009 August Authors: Frazier EA, Fristad MA, Arnold LE Journal: Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology 19(4):453-60 Participants: 12-year-old boy (‘‘John’’) • During six years of conventional treatment (ages 6-12), no medication, alone or in combination, had maintained a desirable mood balance or consistent improvement in John’s functioning Disorder: Bipolar disorder-not otherwise specified (BP-NOS) – age 6 Bipolar I disorder (BP-I), mixed, with psychotic features – age 10 Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) – age 8 Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) – age 10 Design:Case study • Titrated off all psychotropic medications in 19 days • Treated with EMPowerplus for 14 months Results: “All diagnoses fully remitted” EMPowerplus gave John a much better outcome than any previous treatment: • Hallucinations ceased • Anxiety decreased • Compulsions decreased • Impulsivity and fidgeting decreased substantially • Night terrors ceased; John slept throughout the night • Functioning corrected o at home – remained calm and playful; appeared ‘‘clear, slowed down, peaceful, settled, and happy” o with schoolwork – remained focused and efficient o with peers – began interacting more appropriately; maintained friendships |
